We focus on the opening sentences to speeches and think about the most effective ways of beginning speeches depending on the purpose and audience of the speech being written. Students are given topics and audiences and are challenged to write their own speech openings using modelled examples. Focuses on Abraham Lincoln’s famous Gettysburg address. Despite being only two minutes long, its careful use of language has made it one of the most memorable and famous speeches in history. A fully differentiated lesson for KS3 and KS4 classes that analyses Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg address and uses it as a stimulus for students preparing for the Edexcel Spoken Language element of the GCSE English Language course.
